If you have read this blog before I'm sure you noticed the lack of variety there is with music genres. So to spice it up a little I decided to do a review on Colby Dobbs Band's album,
The Great Unknown, which was released on April 12, 2012. CDB is a Rock/Jazz/Pop band that has a very unique sound that any fan of music can enjoy.
The Great Unknown is their debut album and to sum it up, its pretty nasty. First off, the album cover is one of the coolest covers I've ever seen. I think that album artwork is a key factor for me personally when looking at new albums because it really sets your expectations. I mean if every artist or band just had a picture of themselves on the front, there would be no originality, so its neat to see a really cool design like this one. As cool as the artwork is, the album itself is way better, believe me! I was a little unsure of what kind of songs were going to be on this album and from the first track I knew I was going to be in for a treat. The first song on this album is called Cincinnati Queen, and to me it is the perfect first track for this album. This song tells a great story, and the vocals of Colby Dobbs mesh great with the music being played. You will hear this great mesh on all 10 tracks on this album. It took me a while to decide on what song is my favorite, mainly because there are about 4 or 5 tracks that got me hooked instantly, though I would have to say that the title track, The Great Unknown, is my favorite. The reason I like this one so much is the fact that it has the three components that all great songs need; innovation, catchy lyrics, and great music. In my opinion, it is this song that is the icing on the cake for the entire album. Its really hard for me to dislike ANY song with a great saxophone solo in it. That being said, I think that one of the really cool things about this album is that it does have something everyone can enjoy and groove to. The only thing that on this album that I'd like to hear is more of the up-tempo songs and less of the slower ones, but that's just me. Otherwise this album is really good, it is one of the hidden gems of 2012 and if you're ever in Charlotte, NC check to see if Colby Dobbs Band is playing because its not something you want to miss.
